The service corridor widened into a chamber where two escape pod hatches waited side by side. The Captain barked orders, his voice cutting through the blare of the klaxons. The Lieutenant was already at the first hatch, sealing the clamps on a pod filled with injured crew.

At the second hatch, the Sergeant overrode a stubborn lock while the Corporal checked the pod’s nav systems for a safe jump point. Blaster fire echoed closer down the corridor, each shot rattling the thin walls. The crew worked with frantic precision, knowing that once those pods launched, the people inside might be the last survivors of the ship...
