The Security Officer moved cautiously into the alcove, the walls curving inward around a recessed station built of dark alloy and pulsing circuitry. Faint green light seeped from narrow seams, washing over the deck in slow, deliberate waves. Conduits ran overhead like veins, their steady throb blending with the deep hum that filled the ship.
The air was cold and metallic, carrying the faint scent of ozone. The alcove was empty, but the Security Officer could feel the weight of unseen eyes, as if the Collective itself lingered just beyond the walls, aware of every breath and movement.
