The marine entered the maintenance junction, the wide chamber fed by four reinforced entrances cut into scarred steel walls. In the middle of the left platform, the open elevator shaft yawned into darkness, its cage suspended somewhere far below. The Lieutenant stepped to the edge, listening to the hollow echo that drifted up from the depths like a warning.

 The Sergeant covered one of the other entrances, uneasy at how easily something could approach from any direction. On a hostile world where the colony was already failing, this junction felt less like infrastructure and more like the center of a trap...
