The Lieutenant flattened against the bulkhead beside the sealed doorway, blaster raised, sweat tracing lines through the soot on his face. The Commander signaled for silence. Behind them, the Sergeant knelt by an overturned crate, covering the far end while the Ensign tried to reroute power to the blast door controls.

Then came the final hiss of the breach, a circular section of the door glowing white-hot before it fell inward with a crash. The Lieutenant tightened his grip. The next few seconds would decide if they lived or became just another forgotten skirmish in the cold void...
