The Captain stepped into the padded corridor, the soft walls muffling the usual hum of the ship until every breath seemed too loud. The Lieutenant followed close, his hand brushing the quilted surface as if to steady himself.

Dim ceiling lights cast a sickly glow, turning the seams of the padding into deep, shadowed lines. The Ensign glanced back toward the open hatch, uneasy at how silent it had become. Somewhere ahead, the muted stillness was broken by a slow, deliberate footstep...
