The walls here were dented from past firefights, streaked with black where plasma bolts had scorched the steel. A thin draft slipped around the corner, carrying the faint scent of burnt oil and dust. Somewhere beyond the turn, a single metallic clang rang out, then silence. Every muscle tensed as they edged closer, knowing that the machines could be waiting just beyond the bend...
