The service corridor opened into the narrow hatchway leading to the escape pods. The Captain stood at the entrance, shouting for the last of the crew to move. The Sergeant pried open a stuck panel while the Corporal keyed in the launch sequence on the control console, his fingers trembling as distant blaster fire drew closer.

Troopers rushed past carrying a wounded comrade, the acrid smell of scorched armor filling the air. Beyond the hatch, the polished metal of the pod gleamed in the flickering emergency lights, the only promise of survival left in the chaos...
