The Captain slowed as the rounded corridor bent out of sight, the smooth metal walls reflecting the muted glow of overhead lights. Midway to the turn, a cluster of wall sensors blinked in steady rhythm, their soft pulses throwing faint shadows across the deck.

The Lieutenant moved past them, watching the lights spike suddenly before dropping back to normal. The Sergeant took position at the inner curve, rifle angled toward the dark space beyond the corner. From around the bend came the faint scrape of something brushing against the wall...
