The Ensign stepped into the intersection, the deck humming softly beneath his boots. Four identical corridors stretched away, each lined with smooth, dark alloy and veins of faintly pulsing circuitry. The Lieutenant joined him, tricorder flickering with interference that made the readings shift and blur.
Pale green light seeped from hidden seams, casting slow-moving shadows that seemed to follow their movements. Overhead conduits throbbed with a steady, deliberate rhythm, the sound resonating in the walls and floor alike. The metallic tang in the air was sharper here, and the oppressive awareness of the Collective lingered from every direction, as if the ship itself waited for them to choose wrong...
