The Security Officer approached the railing, the cold alloy biting through his gloves as he peered into the depths below. Far beneath, the ship’s inner core stretched away into shadow, lined with towering structures wrapped in pulsing green circuitry. Thick conduits ran vertically and horizontally, their steady rhythm echoing through the vast space like a slow, mechanical heartbeat.
Faint mist drifted between the levels, catching the light and turning it into shifting green veils. The air was heavy with the metallic tang of machinery, and the presence of the Collective seemed to rise from the depths itself, watching from every dark recess far below.
