The Captain stepped into the cryo chamber, the cold mist curling around his boots as the doors sealed behind him. Frost clung to the edges of the glass pods, each one holding a silent, pale figure in deep sleep. The Lieutenant moved between the rows, the soft hum of the life-support systems the only sound in the still air.

The Ensign paused beside an empty pod, its interior slick with condensation and streaked with deep scratches. A slow, muffled thud echoed from somewhere within the chamber, shaking the frost from the glass...
