The Chief Engineer led the way, stepping into the narrow junction where the hum of the ship’s heart seemed louder than anywhere else. Pipes ran in a tangled spine along the starboard wall, their metal skin sweating under the heat of constant pressure. A dim strip light flickered overhead, throwing shadows that crawled across the bulkheads like something alive.

The air carried the smell of oil and recycled coolant, sharp enough to sting the nose. Behind him, the Junior Technician hesitated at the threshold, eyes scanning the shadows between the pipework, as if expecting something to slip out from the dark...
