The Ensign stepped into the cavernous chamber, his eyes drawn to the massive power relay rising from the center of the deck. The structure was a column of dark alloy wrapped in pulsing green circuitry, its surface alive with shifting patterns of light that flowed like liquid energy.
Thick conduits fed into its base from every direction, each one throbbing with a steady rhythm that echoed through the floor. The air was cold and metallic, carrying the faint crackle of raw power moving through the relay. Around the edges of the room, shadows clung to the walls, and the quiet pressure of the Collective’s awareness settled heavily on him, as if the ship itself was listening...
