The Lieutenant stepped through the sliding door, the soft hiss of the mechanism fading into the background hum of the ship’s engines. The corridor beyond was bathed in low amber lighting, a sign the vessel was still running on auxiliary power. The Ensign followed close, tricorder in hand, scanning for lifesigns among the silent decks.

Bulkheads bore faint scorch marks where energy discharges had scarred the panels, and the faint smell of burnt circuitry lingered in the recycled air. Somewhere deeper in the ship, the distant groan of stressed metal echoed, reminding them that the hull was holding—at least for now. Every step forward into the hallway felt like crossing into a place the Federation’s order and safety had already abandoned...
