The Lieutenant stepped into the center of the intersection, the muted thrum of the ship’s core barely reaching this far. Three of the branching corridors each held a closed door, their control panels flickering with intermittent power. The Ensign moved slowly, tricorder raised, its quiet pulses echoing in the stillness as readings scrolled erratically across the display.

The bulkheads bore fresh scorch marks, and a faint haze of smoke lingered near the ceiling, caught in the lazy pull of the ventilation system. From somewhere beyond one of the doors came a muffled thud, followed by silence. The Lieutenant tightened his grip on the phaser, knowing they were standing at the crossroads of something waiting to happen...
